Matariki Kite creations

Last week Totara class started to plan our Matariki Kite creations.

We got into groups and started drawing plans of our kites.  The teacher said we were only allowed to use natural materials.

like: flax, coconut string, hemp string, wood, sticks, bamboo, leaves, feathers and toi toi.

Then we gathered our materials.

The next day we got Malikahs Mum to help us.

"It was fun and creative" Peter

"I loved learning to weave"  Leila

"I adored weaving the flax"  Kadee
 "I loved the braiding"  Ataahua

"It was annoying that we had to restart our kite as it kept breaking" Lockie

Last week, we made kites as a class for Matariki. We made them out of sustainable products such as flax and sticks. It was very fun but we made a lot of mess. First we had to get into groups of 3 or 4.Then plan our kites how we wanted them to look.

First we wove flax into mats, then we made frames for them out of bamboo. We had to saw the bamboo so it would fit the mat. It was super fun. Also we had a special helper Malikah’s Mum called Casia.

Casia brought in coconut string and hemp rope , which we used a lot of . We had a blast! It was the best week at school ever.
