Clay Creations

For Pet day we made clay creations, I know that you need to scorch the clay to make it stick together and you need to keep the clay moist so it doesn't dry out and crack.

I made a turtle and in term 1 we all made a pig at Fern Flat. It takes 1-2 weeks to dry before you fire it in the kiln.  By Ava

Yesterday I made a clay turtle. The clay felt so weird, and I didn't like the feeling, it was so wet and squishy and also kind of cold and nice.  I got a chunk of clay to make a turtle and it had to be thick.
For Pet day we made a clay animal, I made a penguin.  I loved my penguin.  By Georgia
Today I made a squid from clay.   By Xavier
I made a turtle on a paradise island, I had fun making it.  What you need is clay, water, a kiln and some other stuff.  You have to rub it to make the cracks all smooth.  In 2 weeks you need to fire it in the kiln.  By Colin

I made a seahorse with a baby girl.  So you will need:  Water, Tools and Clay.

You need to take your time and roll the animal in the shape you want it to be in.  You need to dry it for 1-2 weeks then you need to put it in the kiln.  A kiln is like a very hot oven.  By Leah

Holes

This term we read the book Holes by Louis Sachar.

When we finally finished reading we watched the movie...

Bella's favourite part was when the Warden scratched Mr Sir on the face with the venom nail polish.

Cory's favourite part was when Mr Sir threw a kid into the barrels because he asked how his face got those marks.

Waikeri's favourite part was when Stanley stole the water truck and drove it straight into one of the holes.

Daetyn's favourite part was at the end when it finally started to rain and all the kids were celebrating.

Georgie loved it when Stanley and Zero jumped straight out of the hole with the treasure and did not get attacked by the yellow spotted lizards.

Ella came dressed up as THE WARDEN

Matariki Kite creations

Last week Totara class started to plan our Matariki Kite creations.

We got into groups and started drawing plans of our kites.  The teacher said we were only allowed to use natural materials.

like: flax, coconut string, hemp string, wood, sticks, bamboo, leaves, feathers and toi toi.

Then we gathered our materials.

The next day we got Malikahs Mum to help us.

"It was fun and creative" Peter

"I loved learning to weave"  Leila

"I enjoyed putting all the finishing touches on"  Ava
"I adored weaving the flax"  Kadee
 "I loved the braiding"  Ataahua

"It was annoying that we had to restart our kite as it kept breaking" Lockie

Last week, we made kites as a class for Matariki. We made them out of sustainable products such as flax and sticks. It was very fun but we made a lot of mess. First we had to get into groups of 3 or 4.Then plan our kites how we wanted them to look.

First we wove flax into mats, then we made frames for them out of bamboo. We had to saw the bamboo so it would fit the mat. It was super fun. Also we had a special helper Malikah’s Mum called Casia.

Casia brought in coconut string and hemp rope , which we used a lot of . We had a blast! It was the best week at school ever.

Time Capsule

On the 29th of may our class burred a time capsule. Our class buried a time capsule.
We buried it on the bottom field of our school.  Some of our class put in photos, a newspaper, a bracelet, a shell and lots of other things.
When we dig it up in two years, lots of things will be interesting.
We buried it next to a drain and a little concrete path.  The time capsule was between the A and the U of our Oruaiti School sign.
We took 3 steps away from the concrete.  We buried the time capsule with spades.  Our teacher put some writing about what we did in the lockdown and what we want to be in the future.

Setting traps in the wetlands

Friday - Enviro day

Ava and Kaylee wrote....
Today we took the traps that were set above our school and cleaned them up then we put peanut butter in them for bait.  Next we set them in the wetlands to catch pests...

We drew a map of where we placed them and next we have to record on the trapping website where we have moved them too.

We set 9 traps.

Matariki - creating the moon phases

Today we used oreo cookies to create the moon phases.

First we had to work out how many cookies were in a packet.

We then got into groups and tried to create the moon phases from scraping the icing off.
